Buddy programmes are in place at many universities around the world and HSE Nizhny Novgorod is no exception. Support, advice, integration into cultural environment and new fellowship – that’s what the Buddy Network is for.
Buddies of the Higher School of Economics Nizhny Novgorod are ready to help international students adapt to studying at HSE and living in Nizhny Novgorod.
International students can turn to members of the Buddy Network for advice and assistance. Buddies have good command of English, are well familiar with life at the HSE and can assist international students with living in Nizhny Novgorod and other everyday matters. Some of the buddies have experience in volunteering and/or international exchanges.
WHAT THE BUDDIES DO:
- Pick up international students at the railway station or from the airport, accompany them to the place, where they will live.
Note: the buddies usually meet students from 8 AM to 9 PM, so that they have enough time to get back home within the operation hours of the transport of Nizhny Novgorod.
- Show international students around academic buildings and the city, as well as nearby banks, post offices, grocery stores, shopping centres, entertainment and recreation facilities;
- Recommend cultural events and entertainment options (e.g. cinemas, theatres, museums, festivals, celebrations);
- Accompany international students during emergencies (e.g. to the hospital, post office, and official establishments);
Certainly there are limits in the areas buddies can give a reliable advice, but in such cases, when the asked questions are beyond their expertise (e.g. visa, selection and registration for classes), buddies should direct international students to the university staff.
