Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course will provide an integrated coverage of methods of classroom instruction, management and assessment. The methodology of the course will include lectures, seminars, lesson construction, practice teaching, in class exercises, discussion of readings, and tests. The final output is taking a course exam in Theory and Methods of Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Learning Objectives

  • The aim of the course is to build third year students’ competency, which enables them to provide effective teaching English as a foreign language at language schools in Russia. The course focuses particularly on the language that teachers need for use in the classroom, for talking and reading about methods of teaching and for furthering their studies in English as a foreign language. It also enables them to learn how to plan and conduct their own lessons in English.

  • Knowledge of: - basics of building and development of communicative competency in English as a foreign language; - contemporary requirements to teaching language construction and developing skills (both receptive and productive) and sociocultural competency pursuant to the CEFR levels in English;

  • Knowledge of key concepts in Teaching reading.
  • Knowledge of key concepts in Teaching writing.

    Language in use. Form and meaning. Purpose. Appropriacy and register. Text and discourse. Grammar.Key concepts.

    Language corpora. Word meaning. Extending word use. Word combinations.
  • Topic 3. Describing the English language. Phonology.
    Pitch. Intonation. Individual sounds. Sounds and spelling. Stress. Paralinguistic features of language.
  • Topic 4. Teaching the language system. Teaching reading
    Reasons for reading. Different kinds of reading. Reading levels. Reading skills. Reading principles. Reading sequences. Encouraging students to read extensively.
  • Topic 5. Teaching the language system. Teaching writing
    Reasons for teaching writing. Writing issues. Writing sequences. Correcting written work. Handwriting.
  • Topic 6. Teaching the language system. Teaching speaking
    Reasons for teaching speaking. Speaking sequences. Discussion. Correcting mistakes in speaking. What teachers do during a speaking activity. Comparison of western and Russian schools of thought on teaching.

    Reasons for teaching listening. Different kinds of listening. Listening levels. Listening skills. Listening principles. Listening sequences. Audio and video.

    Экзамен в устной форме (собеседование) по материалам лекций (аудиозаписи в РР) и the TKT course. Экзамен проводится на платформе Zoom (https://zoom.us). К экзамену необходимо подключиться согласно расписанию ответов, высланному преподавателем на корпоративные почты студентов накануне экзамена. Компьютер студента должен удовлетворять требованиям: наличие рабочей камеры и микрофона, поддержка Zoom. Для участия в экзамене студент обязан: поставить на аватар свою фотографию, явиться на экзамен согласно точному расписанию, при ответе включить камеру и микрофон. Во время экзамена студентам запрещено: выключать камеру, пользоваться конспектами и подсказками. Кратковременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается нарушение связи до 5 минут. Долговременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается нарушение 5 минут и более. При долговременном нарушении связи студент не может продолжить участие в экзамене. Процедура пересдачи аналогична процедуре сдачи.
