Abstract

Legal Linguistics is designed for undergraduate students and aimed at advancing their legal and linguistic competences. This is an inter- and transdisciplinary course, suitable for those who wish to work in an international legal environment in the contexts where a second endemic language is required. Legal Linguistics will help develop an effective legal communication with peers and clients where one party is a non-native speaker from the country belonging to either civil or common law jurisdiction. The synchronous off-line and asynchronous online classes enhance the integrated competences by developing a thematic link, so the language is frequently recycled in different contexts. The on-line and off-line tasks are to stimulate students to further their academic research.

know legal ontology models in civil and common law systems
are aware of lexical and syntactic peculiarities available to the English legalese in comparison to the Russian one
reason with legal rules
translate and interpret legal texts in their majors
can search and find a wanted information in English for academic and professional purposes
understand key linguistic concepts relevant to legal texts
apply linguistic principles to interpret legal documents
analyze the structure and function of legal language
search and find a wanted information for academic purposes

Assessment Elements

Аудиторная работа
1. Минимальное обязательное количество оценок за семестр для выведения аудиторной работы – 3 (ответа). В случае получения менее 3 оценок на семинарских занятиях, их количество делится на 3 для получения средней оценки Оаудиторная. 2. Допустимое минимальное количество пропусков по неуважительной причине в семестр – 4 часа в 1 и 2 модуле, 6 часов в 3 модуле. Студент, демонстрирующий положительные результаты по текущей успеваемости, а также который провел научное исследование по актуальной теме семинаров под руководство ведущего преподавателя, подготовил тезисы и выступил с ними на научной конференции, написал и опубликовал научную статью, освобождается от итоговой аттестации с оценкой “восемь”.
