HSE Students in China

A group of HSE students have returned from their trip to China. They spent two weeks at the Summer School organised by the Southwest University of Political Science and Law in Chongqing. They shared their impressions with HSE News Service.

Evgenia Ryabinina, Faculty of Law

China is a wonderful and unique country. We had a great opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture, language, economics and law. We communicated with professors and students of  the Southwest University of Political Science and Law, went sightseeing in the wonderful city of Chongqing and tried traditional Chinese food. In other words, we fully immersed ourselves in the beauty of this extraordinary country. I am sure that each of us has acquired invaluable knowledge and experience of China that would be difficult to get on an ordinary tourist trip. I would like to thank HSE for opening the door to new horizons for us!

Olga Buryakova, Faculty of Economics

During this trip we learned a lot about the country, both in a cultural and academic way.  Having seen only a small part of this diverse and sometimes controversial culture, some of us may have dispelled some myths, some of us may have strengthened our views of the country, but we have all gained valuable and sometimes surprising knowledge based on our own experience, when communicating with the people of this country.

SWUPL students gave us a warm welcome. They turned out to be communicative and friendly and this helped us to discuss future cooperation plans and understand Chinese traditions better.

Natalia Belova, Faculty of Economics

I was expecting a lot from the trip to China, but the reality exceeded my expectations! In addition to interesting lectures on law, economics and culture in English, Russian and Chinese we learned what it feels like to live in the most densely populated metropolis of the country. We tried local cuisine, bargained in Chinese with sellers on the market and made a lot of new friends!

Anastasia Penkina, Faculty of Humanities

During the school in Chongqing we not only attended interesting lectures on Chinese culture, language, economics, and the country’s legal structure, but also met new people, and learned a lot about their mentality and traditions. Each day spent in Chongqing will be remembered for interesting events and trips: we walked in parks, went to the zoo, visited a crocodile farm, historical museums, etc.

We were studying with Chinese students, who everyday helped us to learn something new about China, they also practiced English and Chinese with us. SWUPL is a large university, with not only thousands of Chinese students, but also students from Korea, Germany, France, England and America. Our Chinese hosts organized several meetings for international students to diversify our evening entertainment: KTV, hotpot and much more. China is a diverse country that you want go back to again and again. I hope that next year I will return to China!

Oleg Sukhorukov, Faculty of Economics

From just a few days in China I have had a lot of impressions! There were informative and interesting lectures and also wonderful activities after our studies. We managed to visit  Chongqing Museum, the old town, local market and the centre of the city with the beautiful Jiefangbei. It was 2 weeks of learning, cognition and exploring the culture of Chongqing and China as a whole! I would like to thank HSE administration for the opportunity to take part in this wonderful programme!

Polina Veselova, Faculty of Law

I was greatly impressed by my trip to China. You can speak endlessly about this country, but it’s much better to go there and see everything with your own eyes. It’s definitely the place you would like to return to. Despite the language barrier and significant differences in culture,we had no difficulties communicating with the Chinese, though sometimes we had to use sign language.

People in China are very friendly, and open-minded, they are always willing to help you and treat foreigners with attention. Chinese culture, cuisine, entertainment and shopping certainly seem exotic for Russian travelers. During our trip we managed to see and feel something of the Chinese lifestyle. As for studying at the university, we learned about the Chinese education system and student life, attended lectures on Chinese law, economics, culture and language classes. We had such wonderful impressions of the trip that after coming home we hope to go back there again.
