How to Extend a Visa?

Visa extension is a procedure that allows you to extend the legality of your stay in Russia for up to 1 year.

You can extend a single entry and multiple entry visa executed by an electronic invitation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

To extend your visa, you need to prepare a full set of documents and personally submit it to the International Office no earlier than 90 calendar days and no later than 45 calendar days before the visa expiration date. To find out what documents are required to extend your visa, see the section: "Documents for visa extension" below.

Execution of invitations, visa extension and other state migration services are provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The International Office is not responsible:

1. for an erroneous payment of a state fee,

2. for not refunding of the paid state fee in case the citizen misses the deadline for submitting documents for the visa extension as well as in case of changes in the organization receiving the visa documents and its payment details,

3. for the situation if the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation refuses to extend the visa.

DOCUMENTS FOR VISA EXTENSION

- An original + a copy of the passport (all pages with stamps, marks, visas);

Please check your passport's expiry date and the number of blank pages in the passport.

The validity of the visa is limited to the validity of the passport. If there is 1 year left before the passport expires, the visa can be extended only for six months or less - according to the regulations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. Then, you will need to renew your passport and submit a full set of documents, including a receipt for payment of state fee in the amount of 1,600 rubles, to transfer the visa to the new passport.

- An original + a copy of the registration (of both sides);

- An original + a copy of the migration card (of both sides);

- The student's visa application form (filled out by the International Office, checked and signed by the student);

- A matte photo 3.5 x 4.5 cm, color (must match the photo on a single entry visa as much as possible. If a foreign citizen is photographed with glasses, then in the photo for the extension, the citizen must also be wearing glasses);

- A receipt for payment of the state fee in the amount of 1,600 rubles (details can be obtained from the International Office);

- A copy of the agreement (if the student is studying on a paid basis; the agreement pages must be printed on both sides of the sheet);

- A study certificate from the programme office (must be printed on the “HSE letterhead”, in Russian; the date of issue of the certificate must be no earlier than two months from the date of submission - for students studying on a government-funded (quota) basis);

- A copy of the document confirming the international student’s referral for studies issued by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, verified by the programme office (for students studying on a government-funded (quota) basis).

If you miss the deadline for submitting documents for visa extension, you must leave Russia before your visa expires. There is no accelerated procedure for the visa extension. 

To extend your visa, you need to prepare a full set of documents and personally submit it to the International Office no earlier than 90 calendar days and no later than 45 calendar days before the visa expiration date.

The multiple entry visa will be ready within 45 calendar days from the date of your documents submission to the International Office. The International Office will inform you when your multiple entry visa is ready by e-mail or phone.

After submitting the documents for the visa extension to the International Office, the passport, migration card and registration will remain with you.

Please do not plan any trips outside of Russia in the first 2-3 months of your stay, until you receive a multiple entry visa!

The Migration Service does not accept documents for visa extension in less than 20 working days.

After you receive the information about the readiness of your visa, please provide the original passport to the International Office and leave it for 1-2 working days.

You will get your passport with the new multiple entry visa back in 1-2 working days after you submit the original passport to the International Office.

After receiving a new visa, you will need to extend your registration at your place of residence.

If you live in a dormitory, you need to contact the International Office.

You must submit the documents for registration within 3 working days after receiving your passport with a new visa. The day of receiving the passport with the new visa is already included in 3 working days.

If you entered accompanied by your family members, then their documents for visa extension should be submitted together with yours.

To do this, each accompanying family member is required to provide:

• Original passport + copies of all filled pages of a family member's passport and a copy of an employee's passport (pages with photos and passport expiration date);
• Copies of the visa of a family member and an employee;
• Originals + copies of family member and employee registrations (on both sides);
• The original migration card of a family member + a copy (on both sides);
• Matte photo 3.5x4.5 cm, bright (should match the photo on a single-entry visa as much as possible. If a foreign citizen is photographed with glasses, then the photo for the extension must also be wearing glasses);
• A receipt for payment of state fee in the amount of 1600 rubles (details can be obtained from the International Office);
• A copy of the employment agreement with HSE;
• A copy of the marriage certificate or birth certificate of the child.

To extend your visa, you need to prepare a full set of documents and personally submit it to the International Office no earlier than 90 calendar days and no later than 45 calendar days before the visa expiration date.

The multiple entry visa will be ready within 30 calendar days from the date of your documents submission to the International Office. The International Office will inform you when your multiple entry visa is ready by e-mail or phone.

After submitting the documents for the visa extension to the International Office, the passport, migration card and registration will remain with you.
