HSE Campus in Nizhny Novgorod Hosts META 2019

An international econometrics conference, 'Modern Econometric Tools and Applications – META 2019', took place at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod for the sixth time.

During the four days of the conference at the main building of HSE in Nizhny Novgorod, there were presentations by over 40 speakers and research teams from different fields of economics and finance. Researchers from Brazil, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, and different regions of Russia discussed the use of econometric tools in contemporary economic research.

As has become traditional, the conference started with a special session dedicated to papers by young researchers and students. Feedback and commentary by leading experts have become one of the most valuable parts of the session for those taking part.

Most of the conference time was dedicated to plenary sessions with renowned econometrics scholars. The range of topics discussed was, as ever, incredibly wide. The conference agenda included such issues as macroeconomic regulation, and household behaviour, as well as the economics of healthcare, higher education, the labour market, and stock markets. There also was a discussion of the problems of the application of econometric tools and possible solutions to these issues.

META 2019 has become much more than an intensive research communication session for its participants. On September 20th, visitors had the opportunity to get to know the city during a walk around some of Nizhny Novgorod’s landmarks. A highlight of the excursion was a visit to Volgo-Vyatsky Central Office of the Russian Central Bank, where the group learned about the key milestones and traditions of the bank.

Dean Fantazzini, Lomonosov Moscow State University

‘META 2019 is an interesting academic event, covering a lot of topics, including labour economics, time series econometrics, and classical financial issues. The level of papers remains very high, and there are a lot of talented researchers here, both those renowned in their respective areas, and those only beginning their way in research. In addition, META is a great platform to look for new ideas and discuss new papers. For me personally, this is a great place to meet my peers, and I value this opportunity’.

Eduardo Ribeiro, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro:

‘The conference has brought together researchers in econometrics, finance and other areas of economics. It’s a good opportunity to see the latest results of research in the region and particularly in Russia. The international format of the event allows Russian researchers to be involved in productive discussions with researchers from other countries, to exchange ideas and get useful feedback’.

Svetlana Makarova, University College London, UK

‘I am very happy to be here, and to be part of META 2019. The aim of the conference is to develop econometric methods in economics and communicate knowledge of this field among the academic community, particularly local researchers. It’s important that the working language of the conference is English, as this helps integrate Russian researchers in the international academic community’.

Andrey Maximov, HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, Chair of the Organizing Committee

‘META 2019 conference is a great way to learn effectively and quickly. First, it has attracted leading econometrics researchers from Russia and beyond, who are able to talk about relevant topics and contemporary tools. Second, young researchers have the opportunity to get advice from more established scholars. And finally, one of the most valuable things is that they can get their papers reviewed. This is very effective, since it happens within a very short time, during the conference.

I am grateful to the conference organizing committee – my colleagues and volunteers – for their professional work in ensuring this event was a success’.

Modern Econometric Tools and Applications – META 2019 Conference Organizing Committee is grateful to the Economic Department of Volgo-Vyatsky Central Office of the Russian Central Bank and Tatyana Nadezhdina for a wonderful excursion for conference participants.
