Sixth Russian-Chinese Law School Was Held at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod

The Southwest University of Political Science and Law (Chongqing, China) is an important partner of HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, with summer and autumn law schools being held at HSE as part of the inter-university agreement. On July 15-27, the sixth summer school was held at HSE Nizhny Novgorod. Nowadays, cooperation between our universities is not only limited to law disciplines – it concerns many issues related to the culture of China and Russia. In addition, interest in Russian culture among students of the Southwest University of Political Science and Law is growing – the number of Chinese students coming to HSE is increasing every year.

This year, 25 students and two lecturers from Chongqing visited Nizhny Novgorod to take part in the summer school. During the two weeks of the summer school, Chinese students not only studied hard, but also visited many of the sights of Nizhny Novgorod, for example, the Chkalov staircase, the GAS Museum, the ‘Limpopo’ Zoo, and the Shelokovsky farm. They also had a chance to admire the Volga landscape during a boat trip, taste traditional Russian cuisine, and meet with the students who had helped to organize these events.

In general, visiting the ‘city of sunsets’ helped the students to see the real beauty of Russia, adds Maria Loshkareva, the school lecturer. Sightseeing was not limited to visiting Nizhny Novgorod - the programme also included trips to Semenov and Gorodets, where the students learned about Russian folk crafts and ancient architecture.

The study process, which included lectures in English, was interesting and comprehensive. All the Chinese participants enjoyed the rich programme – with many of them saying they would like to return to participate in next year’s summer school.

Participation in summer and autumn law schools helps both international and HSE students to gain useful and varied experience. All the participants of these programmes have the opportunity to improve their language skills, meet new friends and learn about life in other countries. We hope that these schools will become a tradition for many years to come!
