Developments in the field of artificial intelligence are gradually taking over the world. AI has the potential to bring incredible benefits to the global economy and our quality of life, but it also creates new challenges. The English-language programme of HSE Online ‘Master of Computer Vision’ will change its name to ‘Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision’ in 2024. On September 1st, a new season of the open Student Research Paper Competition (SRPC) started. This competition is aimed at developing the potential of university students who are interested in academic activities. Students, as well as 2023 graduates of Russian and foreign universities, can submit their papers for the competition until October 15^th, 2023. This year SRPC turns 20 years old, throughout the competition’s history, Vadim Radaev, HSE University’s First Vice Rector, has been the chair of the organising committee. A team of students from HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod and Minin University have created a mobile application and a web service for recognising emotions in photographs. This solution can be useful in marketing, education, personnel management—any areas where the quality of interpersonal communication matters.

Stability on the brink of chaos

The Russian Science Foundation has announced the results of the youth contests of the Presidential Programme. HSE University’s early-career researchers are receiving grants for research projects in economics, psychology, sociology, political science, law, mathematics, information science, optics, engineering, and ocean studies.

This year, HSE University held the Mirror Laboratories project contest for the fourth time. A total of 19 applications were submitted to the contest from 16 HSE University research departments partnered with 16 organisations from 14 Russian regions. Following the contest results, 10 research projects received support.

HSE scientists have compiled a catalogue of rogue waves

A joint team of students from HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod and Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod (UNN) won the main prize of the Smart Campus student hackathon and a certificate for 25 million roubles to create an inter-university IT centre. The award was presented by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.

Second-year students of the Master of Computer Vision programme have presented their projects in this cutting-edge field in AI. The committee included representatives of the programme’s partners from Huawei, YADRO and SBERLAB, as well as Valery Cherepennikov, IT advisor to the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
