Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science (HSE Nizhny Novgorod)

In May 2026, a delegation from Sultan Qaboos University (Oman) made an official visit to HSE University. The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss new forms of cooperation and partnership and to identify areas of mutual interest. Representatives of HSE’s Moscow, St Petersburg, and Nizhny Novgorod campuses spoke about their shared interest in expanding joint projects, primarily in the field of artificial intelligence—a strategic development priority for both universities.

Mathematician Ivan Remizov from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences has made a conceptual breakthrough in the theory of differential equations. He has derived a universal formula for solving problems that had been considered unsolvable in quadratures for more than 190 years. This result fundamentally reshapes one of the oldest areas of mathematics and has potential to have important implications for fundamental physics and economics. The paper has been published in Vladikavkaz Mathematical Journal.

The International Laboratory of Algorithms and Technologies for Network Analysis (LATNA), established in 2011 at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, conducts a wide range of fundamental and applied research, including joint projects with large companies: Sberbank, Yandex, and other leaders of the IT industry. The methods developed by the university's researchers not only enrich science, but also make it possible to improve the work of transport companies and conduct medical and genetic research more successfully. HSE News Service discussed work of the laboratory with its head, Professor Valery Kalyagin.

The International Laboratory of Dynamical Systems and Applications at HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod conducts in-depth theoretical and applied research, including the study of ocean waves, solar corona reconnections, volcanic phenomena, and ship stability. The lab’s researchers, who have received more than 20 significant research grants over the past five years, actively cooperate with Russian and international colleagues from China, Spain, the USA, the UK, Brazil, and other countries. Prof. Olga Pochinka spoke to the HSE News Service about the laboratory’s work.

Artificial intelligence is transforming every aspect of life, expanding both our capabilities and our boundaries. At the same time, it presents new challenges for humanity, including concerns about safety, ethics, and environmental sustainability. Today, each neural network leaves a significant carbon footprint. However, with responsible management, AI has the potential to benefit the planet and become a cornerstone of a sustainable future economy. Panos Pardalos, Academic Supervisor of the Laboratory of Algorithms and Technologies for Network Analysis at the HSE Campus in Nizhny Novgorod, emphasised this point as he addressed the XXV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development.

The Russian Science Foundation has completed its review of projects submitted for grants to support fundamental and exploratory research by teams, as well as 2022 grant winners applying for project extensions. In addition, interdisciplinary projects for fundamental and exploratory research awarded under the Presidential funding programme have been announced. Projects awarded under each of the three categories include submissions from researchers at all four campuses of HSE University.

From 18th to 21st February, the 10th International Congress on Information and Communication Technologies ICICT 2025 was held in London. Associate Professor of the Department of Information Systems and Technologies, Academic Director of the Master's Program "Business Informatics" Pavel Valerievich Malyzhenkov took part in the conference with the report "The Sustainable Business Models Architectural Design in the Frame of Industry 4.0".

On December 5, the award ceremony of the RUSSOFT ranking of top universities took place. The ranking assesses the quality and scale of specialist training in the field of software development among Russian educational institutions. HSE University took fourth place in the 2024 rankings and was named a ‘federal leader.’

The research work of Anastasia Lapshina, a 4th-year student of the Business Informatics program, was presented at the III International ISBM (Information Systems for Business Management) Conference in Bangkok. The baggage of scientific research, interesting to the international academic community, allowed the undergraduate student to present her work on a global research platform with the possibility of publication on the pages of the authoritative publishing house Springer.

The history of AI research in Nizhny Novgorod dates back to the 1960s and 1970s. Today, AI technologies, from voice assistants and smart home systems to digital twin creation and genome sequencing, are revolutionising our life.
