The history of AI research in Nizhny Novgorod dates back to the 1960s and 1970s. Today, AI technologies, from voice assistants and smart home systems to digital twin creation and genome sequencing, are revolutionising our life. Natalia Aseeva, Dean of the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics and Computer Science at HSE Campus in Nizhny Novgorod, discusses how the advancement of AI connects science, business, and education.

The AI Alliance Russia has released a new ranking of Russian universities based on the quality of education in the field of AI. Similar to last year, HSE University has joined the leaders in A+ group alongside MIPT and ITMO. A total of 207 universities from 69 Russian regions participated in the ranking. In 2024, over 35,000 students were enrolled in AI-related programmes at these universities.

Developments in the field of artificial intelligence are gradually taking over the world. AI has the potential to bring incredible benefits to the global economy and our quality of life, but it also creates new challenges. The English-language programme of HSE Online ‘Master of Computer Vision’ will change its name to ‘Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision’ in 2024. Andrey Savchenko, the programme academic supervisor, shares how the new name will affect the programme semantics, why AI has become the main federal trend in the field of information technology, and what tasks graduates will solve.

On September 1st, a new season of the open Student Research Paper Competition (SRPC) started. This competition is aimed at developing the potential of university students who are interested in academic activities. Students, as well as 2023 graduates of Russian and foreign universities, can submit their papers for the competition until October 15^th, 2023. This year SRPC turns 20 years old, throughout the competition’s history, Vadim Radaev, HSE University’s First Vice Rector, has been the chair of the organising committee. In today’s interview, he talks about the history of the competition and the key stages in its development.

A team of students from HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod and Minin University have created a mobile application and a web service for recognising emotions in photographs. This solution can be useful in marketing, education, personnel management—any areas where the quality of interpersonal communication matters.

Stability on the brink of chaos

The Russian Science Foundation has announced the results of the youth contests of the Presidential Programme. HSE University’s early-career researchers are receiving grants for research projects in economics, psychology, sociology, political science, law, mathematics, information science, optics, engineering, and ocean studies.

This year, HSE University held the Mirror Laboratories project contest for the fourth time. A total of 19 applications were submitted to the contest from 16 HSE University research departments partnered with 16 organisations from 14 Russian regions. Following the contest results, 10 research projects received support.
