HSE University Researchers Receive Fifteen Grants from the Russian Science Foundation

The Russian Science Foundation has announced the winners of four 2020 competitions. Some of the winners are from HSE University. They have received grants of 12 to 24 million roubles, for a term of two to four years.

‘The results of the Russian Science Fund competitions have demonstrated that HSE University is maintaining its reputation as one of the leaders of Russian science in a broad range of fields and is continuing to grow as a multidisciplinary university, which is actively involved in the international research agenda,’ said Leonid Gokhberg, First Vice Rector of HSE University.

HSE University takes third place after Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University in terms of the number of grants received for the support of research teams. In the humanities and social sciences, over 10% of available grants went to HSE researchers, making HSE the leading Russian university in these fields. Researchers in mathematics, information science, and system sciences have received slightly less than 10% in the same competition, and this share is also high, said Leonid Gokhberg.

One more conclusion about the competition results is that HSE University’s International Laboratories project, which was begun in 2010, has been a success. Nine out of fifteen winning projects were initiated at international laboratories.

In the competition for the support of research involving leading researchers (three-year grant), the winning project proposal was ‘Algebra and Geometry of Integrable Statistical Models in Higher Dimensions’ supervised by Boris Feigin.

In the competition for the support of interdisciplinary projects (four-year grant), the proposed project, ‘Cognitive Abilities in Children with Motor Disorders: Clinical, Behavioural, and Neurophysiological Correlates’ under the supervision of Iiro Jaaskelainen, together with O.E. Agranovich, was selected.

In the competition for the support of research teams (three-year grants), nine HSE-affiliated projects were selected:

• ‘Fractional and Singular Stochastic Processes’, Supervisor: Valentin Konakov;
• ‘Structure and Trajectories of Academic Research in Post-Soviet Countries: Institutional Practices and Bibliometric Analysis’, Supervisor: Maria Yudkevich;
• ‘Correlation Between Socio-Economic Development Indicators in Russian Regions and the Level of Prejudice: the Role of Social System Justification’, Supervisor: Elena Agadullina;
• ‘Personal Authenticity: Predictors, Manifestations, Applications’, Supervisor: Sofya Nartova-Bochaver;
• ‘The “New Russian Diaspora” 30 Year Later: Identity, Social Capital, Intercultural Relations’, Supervisor: Nadezhda Lebedeva;
• ‘The Transformation of Political Protest due to New Information and Communication Technology’, Supervisor: Andrey Akhremenko;
• ‘Connected Speech Disorders in Patients with Brain Tumours: Linguistic Analysis and Anatomic Correlates’, Supervisor: Olga Dragoy;
• ‘National Health: An Economic Approach to Health Assessment in Relation to Inequality and Population Living Standards’, Supervisor: Vasily Vlassov.

In the competition for continuing the projects by research teams since 2017 (two-year grants), four HSE-affiliated projects were selected:

• ‘Nonstationarity and Fractality of Dynamics in Complex System Evolution: An Application to the Physics of the Earth and Sun’, Supervisor: Sasha Shapoval;
• ‘Early Detection of Neurocognitive Giftedness in Children’, Supervisor: Marie Arsalidou;
• ‘Some Relevant Problems of Applied Stochastic Analysis’, Supervisor: Stanislav Molchanov;
• ‘Developing the Fundamental Methods of the Geometric Theory of Dynamic Systems and Foliations (Lyapunov Energy Functions, Inclusion of Cascades in Flows, Endomorphisms, Solenoidal and Chaotic Dynamics, Orbifolds and Distribution Theory)’, Supervisor: Vyacheslav Grines.
