Course Syllabus

Abstract

The International Business Environment course focuses on the economic, institutional, social, political, historical and cultural specialties of different countries, which significantly affect the companies’ international strategies and activities. Considering all these aspects, the course explains how international business environment can be analyzed, which main analytic methods are most applicable for solving particular analytical tasks and how the results of such an analysis could be used for creating successful international business strategy. We will review influence of globalization, international business integration and role of global institutions, such as the World Trade Organization, which define international “rules of the game” and affect business strategies and welfare of the countries. Participants will also have opportunity to participate in discussion and to solve case studies.

  • Block 1. International comparisons.
    Key Issues Russia in World Economic relations. UN System of National Accounts indicators for international comparisons. Main components of national accounts. Role of national accounts for international comparisons. Main components of national accounts. Role of national accounts for international comparisons. Role of Russia in Global Economic relations. Russia’s international competitiveness. Case studies.
  • Block 2. Cultural differences and cross-cultural communications in business.
    Key Issues Concept and content of national culture. Impact and consideration of national culture on managerial decision-making. Cross-cultural management and rules of cross-cultural behavior. Russian business culture among other cultures: level of mutual perception, level of interaction. Ethical principles of international business relations: balance of goals and means. Management of social responsibility of companies doing business in foreign countries. Case studies.
  • Block 3. The Environment of International Business in the Era of Globalization.
    Key Issues Examples and trends of globalization in the world economy and international business environment. Contradictions of globalization processes. Features of the environment of international business in the context of globalization of the world economy. Impact of the factors of globalization on the success of the business. The impact of globalization on Russia’s economy and society. Case studies.
  • Block 4. Regional integration processes and their impact on business.
    Key Issues Content of concepts of free trade zone, customs union, common market, economic and monetary union. Current features of international economic integration. Russia in APEC: prospects for business integration. Business opportunities and threats. Doing business in conditions of free trade of goods and services, free movement of factors of production. Opportunities and threats for Russian enterprises in the system of regional integration associations. Impact on local business integration at micro level. Case studies.
