Research Vacations in France

During the January vacation Professors at the Department of Fundamental Mathematics Vyacheslav Grines and Olga Pochinka went to France to conduct joint research in the field of dynamic systems with leading world scholar Christian Bonatti.

Nizhny Novgorod and Dijon have been cooperating in dynamic systems research for a long time. For more than fifteen years the scholars have been working away at a mathematical problem that hasn’t been applied yet. But mathematics is constantly changing and today’s problems of solely academic interest could well be put into practice tomorrow. Mathematicians from Nizhny Novgorod have written over 15 works co-authored by Christian Bonatti. But during this winter vacation the researchers made a significant breakthrough towards solving this particular mathematical problem.

Olga Pochinka  states that ‘mathematics is an international science. Joint research projects are very stimulating and help us to stride forward in our studies. Moreover, research activity is a great plus for any lecturer. When you teach your students about problems that haven’t been solved yet and can tell them about your own struggles with them, it makes the lecture much more interesting.’
