HSE University took first place in four subject rankings and second place by the number of gold medals among Russian universities. The university entered the top three Russian universities by receiving nine prizes in various fields. The Three University Missions subject rankings in 29 fields of study were presented for the first time at an open meeting of the Council of the Russian Union of Rectors and the Association of Rating Makers.

HSE University took 1st place in the following subject areas: Economics, Management, Sociology, and Psychology. The university ranks second in Philology and Journalism and Law, and has made the top three Russian universities in Mathematics, Linguistics and Foreign Languages, and History. In addition, HSE University is among the top 5 universities in Information Technology and ranks 6th in Physics.

The new rankings demonstrate which universities provide the best educational and research training of students in their subject areas, while also fulfilling their social role (third mission) in the region and society. Subject rankings will complement the Three University Missions ranking and will be the world's first experience creating subject rankings that take into account all three key university missions.

In total, 136 universities from 41 Russian regions were included in 29 published rankings. The subject rankings primarily feature Moscow (40) and St. Petersburg (17) universities. Tatarstan (6) and Bashkortostan (5) follow them by a wide margin.

The Three University Missions subject rankings are based on three groups of indicators that are used to evaluate education, science, and social value. Statistical data was analysed when compiling subject rankings, and no online expert surveys were conducted. The results are based on data provided by Russia’s Ministry of Education and Science, Clarivate Analytics and Scopus, organizers of ‘I Am a Professional’ student competitions, SCAN—Interfax media and social media monitoring and analysis systems, aggregators of online courses, the Alexa web analytics platform, and social networks.
