Peace, Labour and Math!

Organised by the the Department of Fundamental Mathematics and the Laboratory of Topological Methods in Dynamics, the first international student conference, Mathematical Spring 2019, took place at the Higher School of Economics campus in Nizhny Novgorod over the May holidays.

The conference provided promising young researchers with the opportunity to present their research, attend short lectures by world-famous scientists and learn about the new Master's programmes in mathematics (M.Sc. Mathematics) and computational mathematics (M.Sc. Computational Mathematics) that are now offered by HSE in collaboration with University Passau in Germany.

Professors from the Department of Fundamental Mathematics and invited speakers from the University Passau, Imperial College London and the University of Hradec Kralove, delivered lectures. Students from HSE, local universities in the Nizhny Novgorod area, as well as colleagues from Europe, attended lectures and presented their research. The students' presentations touched upon a wide range of issues in both applied and fundamental mathematics. Students presenting from the 'Mathematics' programme also got there first taste of presenting in English.
Information about Conference was published by Nizhny Novgorod mass media.

Student impressions of the event:

Danila Shubin: This spring I was fortunate to be able to take part in the student conference. I really enjoyed hearing lectures delivered by leading mathematicians. Sebastian van Strien's presentation about one-dimensional dynamics was particularly interesting. Also, owing to this Conference, I was able to present the results of my first research project. This event was useful and informative. I would like to participate in this conference next year.
