Economics and linguistics students from Italy and Belgium have successfully completed HSE Nizhny Novgorod’s Summer School on the ‘Financial Environment and Financial Policy of Firms in Russia.’ Certificates were awarded to Tuscia University (Viterbo, Italy) students Sarah Manzi, Martha Faraoni, and Andrea Santakvilani, as well as University of Antwerp student Manu Reynaert.
Commenting on the programme, the students said they were left with nothing but good impressions. The economics students gained practical knowledge in Central Bank’s monetary policy, the characteristics of Russian inflation, the intricacies of taxation and accounting, and a number of other equally important subjects. The linguistics students delved into the language environment and saw an additional reason for studying Russian – they made new contacts and are ready to actively communicate with their new Russian friends. In addition, all Summer School participants spoke highly of the ‘Intercultural Communications’ discipline; after all, the students were also interested in receiving an impression of Russia during their time of study in the country.
Manu Reynaert noted that the way the European media portrays Russia in the news does not at all match the reality that they students encountered upon arriving to Nizhny Novgorod. Reality, Reynaert commented, turned out to be friendly and inviting. In addition, the students are grateful to HSE instructors and volunteers for creating such an unbelievably friendly atmosphere.
Deputy Dean of HSE Nizhny Novgorod’s Faculty of Economics, Vladimir Rossokhin, who was also in charge of the Summer School, said he was pleased with how the Summer School turned out. This was the first time the school had carried out an international programme specifically in economics, Rossokhin said, adding that the first time was nonetheless a success from both an organizational perspective, as well as an educational one. Adjustments will nonetheless be made in the future programme since stagnation is generally inadmissible in education, he said. For now, it is important for all instructors who took part in the Summer School that the seeds they planted were planted in fertile soil.
Faculty of Economics Dean Maria Shtefan said she was certain that similar international summer schools would only strengthen intercollegiate partnership. She added that such schools were beneficial both for the individuals who came to the university from abroad, as well as for the host. Shtefan also expressed hope that the international summer schools would take place on a regular basis.
Students of the Summer School in economics said they would without a doubt share their impressions on studying in Russia with their friends and classmates, so the HSE is hoping to host new students very soon!
