Contemporary Management: Developing Research and Researchers

Three events in one at the HSE Faculty of Management combined an academic seminar of young management researchers, the seventh annual research conference ‘Contemporary management problems: exploring the boundaries’ and the first international conference on network analysis. The speakers and audience were the same for all three.

As the Dean for the Faculty, Nikolai Filonov said, in the seminar for young researchers run by the HSE Faculty of Management and the Graduate School of Management, this was the first time that post-grads and young researchers and teachers had gathered from all the HSE campuses. Filonov explained that, ‘the main aim of our seminar is to teach our younger colleagues how to write academic articles for publication in the best international, peer reviewed journals. So we’ve invited Igor Filatovchev, Professor at Cass Business School, City University, London (UK), one of the most cited authors today on corporate governance and strategy issues, and Roger Strange, a leading specialist and Professor of International Business at Sussex University to share their experience with us.

This was a busy and lively seminar. Students and young researchers presented their work and took part in the general discussions and the audience were offered useful recommendations and individual consultations.’

There was a democratic atmosphere at the two ‘grown-up’ conferences that followed the seminar with experts, businessmen and students from all the HSE campuses participating.

The conferences held a joint mini plenary session and the main work went on in section groups. Alongside the usual sections on Strategic and corporate management, Project management, Marketing, Business communications, etc, there were relevant interdisciplinary subjects - business models, management in the tourism and hospitality industries and others.

There were three lectures at the plenary session - Igor Filatovchev

talked about promising research areas in corporate governance, Stanley Wasserman, Professor at the University of Indiana (USA) gave a paper about the International Laboratory for Applied Network Research (ANR-Lab) established under his leadership at HSE this year.

Nikolai Filonov said that network analysis is a widely popular research area at the moment but ANR -Lab is focussing on developing tools and methods -  indicators, evaluation, description etc.

Head of Department of Finance and Accounting, at the Higher School of Management, St Petersburg’s State University and joint editor of the highly rated ‘Russian Journal of Management’, Alexander Bukhvalov gave a paper about the interesting supplement of the theory of real options for the development of new technology platforms, for example, producing mobile devices.

‘In general the participants found the sectional sessions were interesting discussions’, said Nikolai Filonov, ‘which tells us that the academic community wants to come to our conferences and helps us to select speakers who meet their expectations. We’ve become more discerning in recent years. It’s curious that some participants whose papers were turned down at the selection stage have been coming to listen - they want to know what their colleagues are doing and how to change their own work so that they’ll have a better chance to be chosen to speak next time.’
