2012 Summer School on Operational Research and Applications

In the first week of May 2012 the Summer School on Operational Research and Applications took place.

In the first week of May under the auspices of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Higher School of Economics and the Laboratory of Algorithms and Technologies for Networks Analysis there took place the Summer School on Operational Research and Applications.

The event welcomed nearly 40 researches engaged in the sphere of Computer Science algorithms, technologies and their applications.

The world renowned scientists delivered courses of lectures to graduate, postgraduate and master’s degree students from Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow and Perm. Highly animated scientific discussions witnessed to the great interest of the participants in the topics discussed and allowed younger researches to easily socialize with their more experienced and illustrious colleagues.

Invited speakers:

o    Dr. Christodoulos Floudas, Professor in Engineering and Applied Science, Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Princeton University, USA

o    Dr.  Themistocles Rassias, Professor at Department of Mathematics, National Technical University of Athens, Greece

o    Dr. Pando Georgiev, Research Scientist, Center of Applied Optimization, Industrial and Systems Engineering Department, University of Florida, USA

o    Dr. Sergiy Butenko, Associate Professor, University of Florida, USA

o    Dr.  Petar Momcilovic,  Associate Professor Master’s Program Coordinator at Industrial and Systems Engineering Department,  University of Florida, USA

o    Dr. Boris Mirkin, Tenured professor at School of Applied Mathematics and Information Science, Department of Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence, National Research University Higher School of Economics, Russia

The Summer School was held at a countryside recreational center. The participants profited from the picturesque surroundings, comfortable accommodations, and multiple sports facilities (enjoyed during the intervals between the lectures). All this left a lasting impression on the Summer School participants.

Pavel Sukhov, a 4th year student of the Department of Business Informatics and Applied Mathematics, HSE:

The overall impression from the Summer School is positive. I am glad that the LATNA laboratory employs all its resources to promote high-level scientific research in Russia. This Summer School provided me with an excellent opportunity to practice my English, especially the vocabulary employed by the mathematicians. One can read and write a lot of articles, but unless one participates in oral discussions, the language will not improve.

I wish such events were more frequent!

Yuriy Dorn, Research laboratory in Predictive Modeling and Optimization at PhysTech (postgraduate student), Computing Centre, RAS (1st year postgraduate student), HSE, Department of Economics (2d year postgraduate student):
The organizers of the Summer School have done a terrific job. We will long remember the vehement and fruitful evening discussions. I, personally, greatly appreciated the opportunity for making new social connections. Among the brilliant lecturers I would like to particularly mention Dr. Themistocles Rassias – a very inspiring and talented mathematician, and Pando Georgiev. I hope that in future the geography of the participants of this Summer School will broaden.

Buzueva Anna, a 3d year student of the Department of Business Informatics and Applied Mathematics, HSE:

I enjoyed this Summer School immensely and would like to heartily thank the organizers – the event was organized at the highest level possible. The lectures were fascinatingly interesting, the lecturers – brilliant. This was a wonderful chance for me to have a snapshot of what is going on at the cutting edge of Computer Science algorithms and technologies.
