South Korea Day in Higher School of Economics-Nizhny Novgorod

On January 19 South Korea Day was held at Higher School of Economics-Nizhny Novgorod. Attaché for education of Southern Korean embassy in the Russian Federation Mr. Chon Chan Yoon was the honorable guest of the event.

After the welcome speech of Valery Zusman, Director of Higher School of Economics-Nizhny Novgorod, Mr. Chon Chan Yoon told the audience about cooperation in the sphere of education between the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation.

Deputy director of External Relations Department of Nizhny Novgorod oblast Yuri Oblivin in his presentation proved that South Korean businesses have their share in the regional economy.

Head of External Economic and Inter-regional Relations of Nizhny Novgorod city administration Elena Mishina explained to the participants of the meeting how Nizhny Novgorod and its Korean twin-city Suwon cooperate in economy, education, and culture.

VladimirTikhonov, professor of Nizhny Novgorod Linguistic University, who spent 5 years in South Korea teaching at a local university, shared with those present his experience of living and working in the Republic of Korea.

Head of the youth branch of the Korean national and cultural autonomy of Nizhny Novgorod Alexey Moon spoke about the history ofKorean immigrationto Russian territories from 17th century to our days. He also presented the activities of the Korean community of Nizhny Novgorod. The performance of “Soraksan” ensemble of traditional Korean dance impressed everyone.

Director of KIA dealer center “Nizhegorodetz” Alexey Makarov revealed the secrets of Korean brands’ popularity in Russia.

Korean students who study at HSE-NN made a short report about classical and pop-music of Korea, PSY’s composition “Gangnam Style” being the hit of their presentation.

In the second part of the program Mr. Chon Chan Yoon met with Korean and Russian students who study at different Nizhny Novgorod universities and learnt about the youth’s interests, problems, and aspirations.

After the official part during informal talks Director of HSE-NN Valery Zusman and Mr. Chon Chan Yoon discussed possible ways of cooperation between HSE-NN and South Korean universities.
