About HSE Nizhny Novgorod

The Higher School of Economics is a national research university whose scholars are making a practical contribution to building a new Russia.

Graduates of our university work at leading Russian and foreign companies, state agencies, and conduct research in academic organizations around the world.

Research, educational, project, analysis, social and cultural work at the Higher School of Economics is all carried out in line with international academic and organizational standards. Our research and innovative developments are known far beyond Russia’s borders.

The Higher School of Economics is recognized by the global academic community as a university that is not only a leader in Russian education, but also a potential partner. We successfully cooperate with universities in the United States, Germany, Britain, China, Spain, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, to name just a few countries.

Strong knowledge of English is an important prerequisite for admission and instruction in our university. In each educational programme, the number of hours devoted to studying English is commensurate with the number of hours at language schools. Moreover, every student, regardless of educational programme, takes the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) in the second year of study. Only upon successful completion of this test can students advance to the next course.

Each educational programme provides for a number of special courses taught in English by foreign professors.

The Higher School of Economics has campuses in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, St. Petersburg and Perm.

The Nizhny Novgorod campus is the oldest of all the campuses outside Moscow. In 2016, it will mark its 20th anniversary.

Today, the Higher School of Economics – Nizhny Novgorod comprises

Advantages of undergraduate studies

1. We have optimized the educational process

The academic year at the Higher School of Economics is divided into four modules, each lasting from 9 to 12 weeks. In contrast to the traditional semester, this approach optimizes the sequence for studying subjects and frees up as many as six additional weeks of study per year through effective distribution of tests and examinations during the learning process.

2. We find the best teachers

The Higher School of Economics is developing a multi-campus university model. This means that our scientific and academic groups in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Perm and Nizhny Novgorod form a single entity. Any student of the Higher School of Economics can become familiar with the scientific work of teachers working on other campuses and can attend their online lectures.

3. We build strong educational groups

The Higher School of Economics ranks in the top five universities in Russia by the quality of incoming first-year students, and the Nizhny Novgorod campus ranks first in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

4. We teach teamwork aimed at results

In addition to lectures, seminars, internships and practical training, the Higher School of Economics requires students to engage in project work. Projects are team undertakings aimed at solving a particular case (e.g., business objectives, scientific questions, social issues, etc.) related to students’ field of study. Teamwork and a close relationship with the company that initiates a project allow students to develop competencies in such areas as team building, leadership and time management.

5. We offer a real choice of educational paths

Today we require each student to choose a minor – a set of courses in four subjects taught in other educational programmes. This allows students to understand the value of interdisciplinary knowledge, broaden their professional interests, and, most importantly, have a greater competitive advantage over graduates of other universities following graduation.

6. We impart good taste on our students

Student life at HSE is filled with all sorts of events – from the ‘What? Where? Who?’ games to the student newspaper. Clubs cater to all interests ranging from the football team to groups that focus on social initiatives such as organizing aid to orphanages and hospital patients. Moreover, HSE holds cultural projects, including ‘Cultural Environment’ and ‘Scientific Thursdays’, which involve art exhibitions, live music concerts, and open lectures on a wide variety of academic topics.

Advantages of studying in Master’s programmes at HSE

All graduates of the Higher School of Economics in Nizhny Novgorod receive the Diploma Supplement, a document confirming that the education received meets European standards. A degree from the Higher School of Economics is a guarantee of demand for graduates on the labour market, and ensures quick and successful career growth at leading Russian and foreign companies.

Master’s students maintain the status and privileges of all students. For the first half year after enrolment, all Master’s students receiving state-funded tuition and fees are paid stipends; thereafter, stipend payments are made on the basis of academic progress.

HSE’s academic programmes are recognized by dozens of leading foreign universities, which allows for double-degree programmes and ‘cross education’.

A university open to Nizhny Novgorod

A unique project of the HSE Nizhny Novgorod campus aims to harmoniously fuse science, culture and education in an institution of higher education.

The architects of this project have set a goal of making the university a cultural and educational centre that is open to the city. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that the project is not only designed for students and teachers at HSE Nizhny Novgorod, but for local residents as well. All residents of Nizhny Novgorod are welcome to attend meetings with leading cultural and academic figures. HSE Nizhny Novgorod is becoming a platform for discussion and a place for local residents to enjoy cultural activities.
