Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is aimed to teach students basic terms of corpus linguistics and language corpora being a resource for linguistic analysis. The course presents a survey of existing English-language corpora and teaches the use of variety of corpus tools. The methods and tools of corpus linguistics are also used for the analysis of the sample. The main functions of the programs AntConc, Voyant tools and the text corpora BNC, COCA are demonstrated. Students will get acquainted with the software that allows them to analyze text corpora. During the classes, students will master practical skills of working with corpus tools, in particular, drawing up a search prescription and interpreting search results.

Learning Objectives

• Students will learn basic terms, theories of corpus linguistics and the classification of text corpora.
• Students will learn how to use AntConc corpus manager, Voyant tools, BNC, COCA and other text corpora.

Expected Learning Outcomes

• Formulate the main approaches to understanding corpus linguistics, Formulate the definition of the main terms of corpus linguistics.
• Know the basic functions of corpus managers and the principles of text corpora.
• Learn how to interpret the results obtained with the help of the mentioned software (corpus managers, text corpora).
• Integrate the principles of corpus technologies and data visualization (storytelling in analytics) into research based on the material of various languages.
• Organize effective communication in groups in order to conduct a linguistic analysis of empirical material from the point of view of corpus linguistics.
• Present the results of group work both orally and in writing to a professional audience.
