“If you’re looking to get away for a day or two from the busy streets of Nizhny Novgorod, then Gorodets is the perfect quiet little town to explore. Within an hours drive and a short day trip, we were able to see lots the town had to offer. From the outdoor skating rinks that children played ice hockey on to the lively Main Street with lots of good local dishes with twists, such as crepe shops with potatoes, shawarma or other delicacies. If you scurry away from the center there’s a vast array of museums that can be explored quickly but hold lots of cute objects like town history all the way to gingerbread houses. The architecture is always beautiful to witness too! The houses are old and classic to the Russian style, something you don’t see eherywhere in a Russian city. Lastly you can see the Volga River and the ice fishers going in and out. All in all it’s a very nice city for a day trip!” Austin Garrett Sites
“It was my very first time to spend New Year away from home and my family. But still, it was a very wonderful and unforgettable experience. This time, I had the privilege to spend the New Year in Moscow with a Russian family. It was also a great opportunity for me to visit Moscow. While in Moscow, I visited the Salaris shopping center (Торговый центр Саларис), which I was told was one of the biggest in Moscow. Then I took the metro and visited the Moscow city centre. That was when I realised how beautiful and sparkling Moscow is. After visiting the city, I spent the rest of time with my new Russian family in Зосимова пустынь in the Moscow Region. My new Russian family invited other people on New Year’s Eve, and I spent the New Year with other Russians and some other Africans that were also invited. It was particularly interesting because I spent the New Year the “Russian way.” I also eat the famous “Olivier Salad” as was told New Year in Russia without “Olivier Salad” is not New Year. The funniest part is that everyone could remember my name because of “Olivier Salad.” The New Year eve ended with some beautiful African melodies and dancing styles after everyone had asked me to sing some African folks. My New Year in Moscow was the first New Year I ever spent out of my country, and I am very happy that I had a good time.” Tiotsop Kamou Olivier Mozard
"We thought we already knew almost everything about the Nizhny Novgorod region in Russia, but it turned out to that we were wrong. On January 12, Damilola, Chro and I visited the beautiful little town of Gorodets with our program academic supervisor, Edita Merkulova. After about an hour and a half drive from Nizhny Novgorod, we could clearly see what this beautiful town had to offer. First, we visited Gorod Masterov, an art museum where masters of local art craft exhibit and sell their creations. We had the opportunity see how the people create different art objects by hand. Then, we visited The Gorodets Museum of Local Lore where we were told how the people of Gorodets lived about two hundred years ago, and we also saw real objects that belonged to one the richest families. Visiting this museum was also an opportunity for us to know more about typical Russian cultures and traditions. Finally, our trip ended with a little walk around the city center where we also tasted some good local food. The most remarkable thing about Gorodets is the people themselves. They are very friendly and welcoming and always ready to help if you have any problem. The trip to Gorodets was one of our most memorable experiences in Russia and we are very grateful to Edita Merkulova for that". Tiotsop Kamou Olivier Mozard
