Professional competencies are specific to graduates of this educational program. Professional competencies are determined on the basis of professional standards corresponding to the professional activities of graduates, as well as on the basis of an analysis of labor market requirements, generalization of foreign experience, consultations with leading employers, associations of employers in the industry in which graduates are in demand.
The totality of all universal, general professional and professional competencies developed in a graduate ensures his ability to carry out professional activities in at least one area or sphere of professional activity, or to solve problems of professional activity of at least one type established in the OS.
At the same time, the program also has a unique component, which is provided by the combination of two content blocks:
a block of fundamental linguistic disciplines (including corpus technologies and the basis for their use to solve practical problems)a block of applied disciplines during which students form and develop competencies in text analysis using digital technologiesWithin the framework of the NIS, when discussing projects, the main attention is paid to automatic methods that allow solving research problems (collection of literature and network analysis of a scientific field, the specifics of setting a problem and choosing corpus technologies, methods of mathematical statistics, data mining in interdisciplinary research).
The Project and Research Seminar “Digital Projects and Methods for Solving Applied Linguistic Problems in Business” discusses the stages and scenarios for creating digital projects; the tasks of applied linguistics in solving problems that companies face; the role of text analysis in the digital transformation of business, and others.
As we have observed the majority of educational programmes in Linguistics offered in Nizhny Novgorod region provide a solid education in the Linguistics, but remain excessively theoretical and take little account of the latest achievements in the humanities, such as digitization and interdisciplinarty, an approach that is in great demand in the modern labor market. Students willing to study on our programme will receive a fundamentally new and modern understanding of Linguistics and its practical application in the modern world.
A graduate of the Applied Linguistics and Text Analytics programme will be competent in working with text data, allowing them to analyze texts and arrays of texts using methods of computer and corpus linguistics, legal linguistics, discourse analysis and psycholinguistics. Mastering technological tools will be supported by fundamental knowledge of the principles and patterns of humanities thought, theoretical approaches to the formalization of humanities knowledge, human cognition and use of language for structuring information. Possession of a fairly wide repertoire of quantitative methods (statistics, computer and corpus linguistics, programming languages, etc.) will significantly expand the employment opportunities of our graduates.
Through internship in various industries (government institutions, digital advertising, media, digital data analytics, bank training centers, museums, etc.), graduates will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the areas in which modern linguists may be in demand and choose one of areas for further professional development.
English language as the language of instruction on the Applied Linguistics and Text Analytics programme gives students an opportunity to maintain and improve their level of English proficiency in academic and professional communication during the studies. The program is designed to enhance the competitiveness in obtaining jobs in international companies where an advanced level of foreign language proficiency is required. In addition, conducting courses in English will significantly expand the geography of admission of foreign applicants who do not have a sufficient command of the Russian language, but would like to receive quality education in Russia.
Graduates of the programme will have following skills:
- generate and analyse texts;
- organise and conduct research in order to develop and create innovative electronic language resources (text corpora, dictionaries and thesauri, lexical and terminological databases, including ones for teaching Russian as a foreign language);
- monitor arrays of information, develop short-term and long-term forecasts in various subject areas using modern computer tools for linguistic research;
- compare different types of discourses and conduct a comparative analysis of information from different subject areas;
- develop expert assessments and make short-term and medium-term forecasts in the field of language policy and planning;
- prepare technical design specification for the team of software developers for collecting and analysing data;
- prepare high-quality analytical documents.
