Course Syllabus

Abstract

The present course is designed to give students comprehensive knowledge of the theoretical grammar and stylistics of the English language within the framework of contemporary research. The course acquaints the students with the major approaches to analyzing the morphemic structure of English words, parts of speech and their grammatical categories, fundamentals of Modern English syntax, stylistic phonetics, stylistic morphology, stylistic lexicology, stylistic syntax and stylistic semasiology. The theoretical material is presented in the form of lectures, and further discussed and practiced during a series of seminars.

Learning Objectives

• The learning objectives of the course are as follows: • to give the students knowledge of major theories in Modern English morphology, parts of speech and their grammatical characteristics, syntactical peculiarities of phrases, sentences and sentence parts, stylistic phonetics, stylistic morphology, stylistic lexicology, stylistic syntax and stylistic semasiology; • to acquaint the students with important linguistic terms in English; • to give the students practice in reading and interpreting scientific linguistic texts in English as well as analyzing texts of different genres according to their grammatical and stylistic properties; • to help students master competencies, which will allow them to be successful in their professional interaction.

Expected Learning Outcomes

• • has an understanding of the major theories of in Modern English morphology, parts of speech and their grammatical characteristics, syntactical peculiarities of phrases, sentences and sentence parts
• • has an understanding of stylistic phonetics, stylistic morphology, stylistic lexicology, stylistic syntax and stylistic semasiology
• • formulates of the place of theoretical grammar and stylistics within a broader scope of linguistic studies
• • be able to effective interaction on theoretical and practical issues of grammar and stylistics within the intercultural context
• • be aware of the use and interpretation of linguistic terms and specific scientific language when discussing research materials and texts of various genres
