Course Syllabus

Abstract

The aim of the course is to build students’ communicative competency, which enables them to provide effective information exchange in English in their professional (legal) area. The course includes basics of knowledge on Common Law jurisdictions as well as the Russian legislation; extensive reading of legal texts; debates, case studies, giving oral presentations; writing business letters and memos to lawyers and clients, doing research on a legal topic; participating in negotiations of contracts. The final output is taking a course exam in legal English.

Learning Objectives

  • This course is aimed at preparing students to use legal English in different legal contexts To achieve this goal, they will have the opportunity to explore authentic legal texts (documents, contracts) as a way of knowing how they are filed in English, the speaking practice being a tool for problem solving. They will be actively engaged in reading and discussing legal cases.

  • Topic 1. The practice of Law
    Reading: Bodies of law, Types of laws. A lawyer’s CV. Listening: Documents in law. Law firm structure and culture. Writing and Speaking: Explaining what a law says. Civil court systems. Describing the Russian law system.
  • Topic 2. Contract law.
    R.: Contracts Contract formation. Remedies for breach of contract. Damages. L.: Remedies. Wr. And Sp.: Follow up correspondence to a client. Presentation. Initial interview with a client.
  • Topic 3. Contracts: assignment and third party’s rights
    R.: Introduction to contract assignation. Understanding contract clauses. A closing argument. L.: Preparing a law suit and developing an argument. Wr. and Sp.: Memo giving advice. Explaining third party rights. Discussing and evaluating sources of information.
  • Topic 4. Employment law.
    R.: Introduction to Employment law. Discrimination. Unfair dismissal. L.: Liability risks. Wr. and Sp.: Attachments and formality. Agreeing and disagreeing.
  • Topic 5. Company law.
    R.: Introduction to company law. Types of companies. Capitalisation. L.: Forming a business. Changes in the company. Shareholders’ rights. Legal aspects of an acquisition. Wr. And Sp. – Standard phrases for writing letters. Paraphrasing and expressing opinions.
