Abstract

The course “Practical Course of the English Language” is designed for the first-year students of the Undergaduate Programme “Foreign Languages and Cross-cultural Communication” and is comprised by three aspects: “Practice of Oral and Written Speech”, "Grammar" and "Phonetics". The main aim of the course is to develop students’ communicative competence in all skills and aspects at B1+/B2 levels, with the elements of C1 level, and prepare students to use English as a means of professional communication. Moreover, the course is aimed at developing study skills and the ability of independent studies indispensable for further undergraduate and postgraduate study.

  • The course “Practical Course of the English Language” is designed for the first-year students of the Undergaduate Programme “Foreign Languages and Cross-cultural Communication” and is comprised by three aspects: “Practice of Oral and Written Speech”, "Grammar" and "Phonetics". The main aim of the course is to develop students’ communicative competence in all skills and aspects at B1+/B2 levels, with the elements of C1 level, and prepare students to use English as a means of professional communication. The principle goal is formation of professional and academic competencies (including instrumental and social and personal competencies), defined in the Education Standard of HSE in the field of study 45.03.02 “Linguistics”. The main goal is the development of foreign language communicative competence, including subcompetences: linguistic competence, sociolinguistic competence, discursive competence, strategic competence, sociocultural competence, social competence.

  • conduct the linguistic analysis of aural and written texts for the purpose of professional communication
  • model and project ways to overcome intercultural barriers
  • use target vocabulary to produce oral and written speech on topics specified in the syllabus
  • apply skills of note-taking in listening comprehension
  • produce written texts of different genres (specified in the syllabus)
  • produce coherent units of speech using standard pronunciation and intonation (RP)
  • use a variety of discourse markers
  • produce and understand written and aural texts in different styles and registers
  • apply various listening and reading strategies
  • produce oral and written speech with a greater degree of accuracy
