Course Syllabus

Abstract

Modern English, as can be observed in contemporary texts (finction and non-fiction) and TV series, is characterized by the presence of numerous elements that seem illogical and going against the rules of grammar and traditional use of phrase. With deeper analysis it becomes clear that these «exceptions» are in reality survivals from different periods in the history of language development and can be explained through this historical prism. The course «History of the English Language» is designed to get students acquainted with different periods peculiarities (phonetic, lexical, grammatical) that can still be found in Modern English. Practical analysis is performed on samples from classical texts (including Old English and Middle English classics) as well as XXI century text fragments. The aim is to develop the ability to recognize, identify and be capable of interpreting correctly different historical elements in Modern day English: paradigmatical (contributing to the understanding of parallels among different languages) and stylistic (allowing the author of the text to create specific atmosphere).
