Abstract

“Theory and Practice of Literary Translation” course introduces students to basic principles of translation process while working with literary texts. During this course, students can develop their knowledge not only in crucial theoretical aspects of translation theory, but also in practice, venturing into multifarious spheres of literary translation: from prose and poetry to board and video games. The main source language is English.

Learning Objectives

The main goal of the course is to form a comprehensive understanding of the most significant aspects of literary translation as well as develop a wide range of practical skills involving literary translation.
To introduce students to the main translation theories in historical perspective.
To improve the understanding and interpretation depth of English prose and poetry using a "close reading" technique as a pre-translation step.
To gain broad translation experience on the example of prose and poetry texts of different type, genre, style, period, etc.
To master different methods of literary translation on the example of the most frequent issues (proper names, phraseology, wordplay, character speech, etc.).
To develop compex translator's skills in stylisation (archaisation), poetry translation, and localisation.

Expected Learning Outcomes

A student knows the history of the discipline and subfields
Understand the difference between foreignization and domestication
Able to analyse a translated text from the percpective of translation strategies.
Identify realia in literary texts
Able to translate realia in context using an appropriate translation method
Able to tranlate proper names in context using an appropriate translation method
Identify idioms, proverbs and other paremiological units in literary texts
Able to translate paremiological units in context using an appropriate translation method
Able to analyse the stylistic and cultural features of characters' speech in literary texts
Able to translate characters' speech in context using an appropriate strategy
Able to analyse a literary text from the perspective of style and archaism usage
Able to find an appropriate "stylistic key" for translation
Able to translate literary texts using appropriate stylistic features and "archaisation depth"
Able to translate poetic texts of various age, genre and verse form
Able to translate in-game texts of different types using proper strategies
Able to compile annotated translator's glossaries for game terminology
Able to recognise puns and worldplay in literary texts and determine their contextual role.
Able to translate puns and wordplay using an appropriate method.
