How to Teach Computers to Understand Emotions: a Student from Nizhny Novgorod Campus Won Third Season of IV HSE Research Battles

Marina Kaziulina, first-year student of the Bachelor’s Programme ‘Fundamental and Applied Linguistics’, is the winner of the third season of IV Research Battles with her research on machine learning conducted at the interface of psychology, linguistics, and data-science. Together with her colleague Alexander Babiy, Marina has designed an algorithm to identify emotions in texts based on thousands of online users’ messages.

In a new RAEX Analytics ranking that evaluates Russian universities in terms of their societal influence, HSE took third place, leading the list in terms of popularity among young people and taking second place in terms of online influence.

HSE Ranks Among Top 3 Russian Universities in THE Emerging Economies University Rankings

For the first time HSE University has placed among the top twenty universities in countries with emerging economies in the THE Emerging Economies Rankings. Ranking 18th, HSE now places among the top three Russian universities on the list. Earlier this year, HSE University was the third highest ranking Russian university in the THE World University Rankings.

HSE University Enters Top-5 of Best Russian Universities in National Survey

According to a national survey conducted by VCIOM, HSE University ranks fifth in the ‘People’s Ranking of Russian Universities’. A total of 1,600 Russians aged over 18 participated in the survey, which was carried out through phone interviews, relying on a random sample of landline and mobile numbers.

HSE University improved its performance from last year, entering the Top-200 of the Times Higher Education (THE) subject ranking in Arts and Humanities. We now place second among Russian universities and have the best results of the participants of the Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100.

In January 2019, the graduate of the first Global Business intake, Irina Tolkacheva, received her second master's degree in Global Business, this time from Johannes Kepler University in Linz. Irina essentially completed the double degree program before it was officially launched. On January 25, 2019, the Insignia of Chevalier (Knight) of the French National Order of Merit was awarded to Gennady Ryabov, Advisor to the Director of HSE Nizhny Novgorod, by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the French Republic to Russia, Sylvie Bermann.

HSE Team from Nizhny Novgorod Win Silver Medal at ICC Moot Court Competition in The Hague

The final of the Russian-language moot court competition at the International Criminal Court (ICC) took place in The Hague. According to the results of the Russia-wide competition, which was held in April in Moscow, teams from Moscow State University and HSE’s campuses in Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow were selected to participate in the finals in the Netherlands.

HSE has become the first Russian university to enter the top list of THE Young Universities, a global institutional ranking.
